Just a quick WIP photo of a cottage I'm building using Scenery Forge's molds. Mostly I built this to just learn how to use the mold effectively. More to come soon.WQRobbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17436898737750581192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453592533211427430.post-60203609507469371772018-09-08T18:21:00.002-04:002018-09-08T18:21:37.598-04:00Scenery Forge Gothic plaster and resin buildI decided to try using the <a href="https://www.scenery-forge.com/index.php" target="_blank">Scenery Forge Gotic mold</a> again, but this time using regular Plaster of Paris for the casts, then infusing it with resin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9qWh9O0bPL1sqOHrR-qABRpCpz8Ane1qCEM8KXpax7M3GKCNKfcgY2CAm0JTTm6eml1jrPAoMxGt4RHqbGClwEy3kUlKK9z-UJ_V7_xKw6XRT-FDFXcPrrGhhWBqfukWQF_ZuSYWjmj4/s1600/IMG_3865.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9qWh9O0bPL1sqOHrR-qABRpCpz8Ane1qCEM8KXpax7M3GKCNKfcgY2CAm0JTTm6eml1jrPAoMxGt4RHqbGClwEy3kUlKK9z-UJ_V7_xKw6XRT-FDFXcPrrGhhWBqfukWQF_ZuSYWjmj4/s320/IMG_3865.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6H_Scq_EvvQHPF-GV-9hYAejq5JgoiAghejDKRXQ65JW7XndZM0-6b5Nzg4MhXC_xFrgcls_weoPvXN8VvrWeu7FYG7k1aZXhEjZACJnmnK2MgvE9m-OXNVEFWMwP7hwU_ZLWn7dMY54/s1600/IMG_3864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6H_Scq_EvvQHPF-GV-9hYAejq5JgoiAghejDKRXQ65JW7XndZM0-6b5Nzg4MhXC_xFrgcls_weoPvXN8VvrWeu7FYG7k1aZXhEjZACJnmnK2MgvE9m-OXNVEFWMwP7hwU_ZLWn7dMY54/s320/IMG_3864.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a pretty simple build, requiring only a few casts. I used the Hirst Arts Wooden Plank Mold (#220) to make the second story floor, gluing the pieces onto a scrap of Taskboard. A piece of wood served as the base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJFybvyrHTqWmwiciuBasLEo-p7KliLUaiP-SoMPL0T4M-lD3c6sCx5Bf5neQY4UmT8XZE_4Fnfzzak1VHsBFVUcKfsTr77s_NVg9UqK-KPskKNgDfrOaMhcdM0P4DaccWugxSj4LvbGk/s1600/IMG_0003.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1292" data-original-width="1600" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJFybvyrHTqWmwiciuBasLEo-p7KliLUaiP-SoMPL0T4M-lD3c6sCx5Bf5neQY4UmT8XZE_4Fnfzzak1VHsBFVUcKfsTr77s_NVg9UqK-KPskKNgDfrOaMhcdM0P4DaccWugxSj4LvbGk/s320/IMG_0003.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used Envirotex Lite Pour On High Gloss Finish resin, thinking "this will never work." I was shocked then, when the plaster absorbed all the resin, and after a few days to cure the plaster was surprisingly hard and I wasn't able to scrape any with a finger nail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, after the same kind of paint job I used on the previous piece, and this simple (but surprisingly durable) bit of corner terrain is finished.</div>

The idea was an outdoor crypt/mausoleum/cemetery garden.<br />
<br />
The next step is to texture the base. I like to use Modge Podge, because it is cheap and is made for this kind of thing. For the texture itself, I use model train ballast, a fine gravel. After layering it on the Modge Podge, I let the whole thing dry for about half an hour, then apply a second, thick layer on top. This makes for a sealed surface that won't flake off.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once that was dried, I paint three layers of paint onto the plaster: dark, mid-tone, and light. (For those who are curious, it was Behr's "Adirondack Blue," "French Colony," and "Pixel White.") Here's the final look: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once that was done, I painted the ground, first with dark brown acrylic craft paint, followed by tan, and then finally bone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, I had a decision to make: what season to make the terrain? With the popularity of Frostgrave, there is a lot more winter-themed terrain out there. I considered a typical Spring/Fall effect, but finally decided to go with snow, in this case Games Workshop's snow flocking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, I used Hirst Arts mold #230, Clay Tile Roof Mold, to make a small roof for the crypt proper. I attached it, figuring the building was really too small to play inside. I applied three layers onto it, mostly a dark brown, blended up with a dark red. Here's the final look:</div>

Their molds are wonderful, versatile, and durable.<br />
<br />
Recently I discovered another similar company called <a href="http://www.scenery-forge.com/index.php" target="_blank">Scenery Forge</a>. They also make RTV silicone molds for casting pieces with plaster to make wargaming and roleplaying game terrain. Unlike Hirst Arts molds, which basically have you casting small blocks that can be assembled in countless ways, Scenery Forge molds have you casting larger pieces. These pieces make assembling terrain quicker (and arguably sturdier).<br />
<br />
So I decided to try it out. For my first mold I bought <a href="http://www.scenery-forge.com/index.php?id_product=14&controller=product&id_lang=1" target="_blank">Mold 61 Gotic</a>. It seemed the best one for doing both fantasy and science fiction terrain. The mold itself has four main panels: a door, a windowless wall, and two panels with two open windows. In addition are several crosses, a casket, a loads of other gothic detail pieces (including a few skulls). There is also a couple of angled pieces for doing sloped roofs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuqV2BvnEhXs6iC6chLCASQ5COzcT27S4BctIGR8s1T0kq_DvTxhoBJrB9o3vSdwA_QBkTj_0-ADees4oB0CreYN_l1wSxVsvEokcxIShOD7X42kzwpnL3MLrwM_MVc_0ddz7lUoU6pGc/s1600/IMG_3831.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuqV2BvnEhXs6iC6chLCASQ5COzcT27S4BctIGR8s1T0kq_DvTxhoBJrB9o3vSdwA_QBkTj_0-ADees4oB0CreYN_l1wSxVsvEokcxIShOD7X42kzwpnL3MLrwM_MVc_0ddz7lUoU6pGc/s320/IMG_3831.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
On their website, they suggest using regular Plaster of Paris and reinforcing it by saturating the plaster with resin. I tried regular Plaster of Paris, and found the pieces too fragile. So I went back to dental plaster.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0k-f5I-1lEbwKAYFh-iA9KByDtEuIElAxc-AIUeiTmV7sh3WlFYYs_sniOcWOAprUBj9n3yXh5WeGn-APGKL-s6tkdC55nJoe_Za4oIts5K28D6jPn_JMxuIfdrH8U2pwPMvJEqX7peU/s1600/IMG_3825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1256" data-original-width="1600" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0k-f5I-1lEbwKAYFh-iA9KByDtEuIElAxc-AIUeiTmV7sh3WlFYYs_sniOcWOAprUBj9n3yXh5WeGn-APGKL-s6tkdC55nJoe_Za4oIts5K28D6jPn_JMxuIfdrH8U2pwPMvJEqX7peU/s320/IMG_3825.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Various pieces set out to dry in the dehydrator</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
For those curious about such things, Scenery Forge is in Spain, and the pieces are in centimeters, not inches. The main panels are 5cm wide, 7cm tall, and 1cm thick. 5cm is pretty close to 2 inches, so should fit fairly well with HA pieces should the need arise.<br />

Also, for those familiar with HA molds, in order to fill all four panels and a few other pieces, you need to mix 60g of water and 180g Merlin's Magic dental plaster. I like to use this <a href="https://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20target=%22_blank%22%20href=%22https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S17162/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000S17162&linkCode=as2&tag=thearmcol-20&linkId=700153d20f4de897913b27dedd77ca5b%22%3EiSi%20Basics%20Flexible%20Silicone%20Mixing%20Bowl,%20One%20Quart,%20Red%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=thearmcol-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B000S17162%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E" target="_blank">silicon mixing bowl</a> I got on Amazon. Just saying.<br />
<br />
My initial idea for a first build was something inspired by the sample of the Scenery Forge website, with a little bit of the Warhammer <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/Garden-of-Morr" target="_blank">Garden of Morr</a> thrown in. The whole thing should take me less than half a dozen casts, with a couple of extra casts of the <a href="http://hirstarts.com/tips5/tips5.html#clay" target="_blank">Hirst Arts Mold 230 Clay Tile Roof Mold </a>thrown in. Specifically, this build needs four doors, eight windows, four solid walls, Four corner columns, two angled pieces, and odd bits thrown in for detail.<br />
<br />

Specifically, I have started the Death Guard starter army from the "Know No Fear" box set.<br />
<br />
My first unit is the Death Guard Chaos Space Marines. There are five in the starter box.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1v8kBW78RmguIbF8eD1gGlWriV3Al6ZC_xs9HBlwQtqlbFxMqgNj7pWUnWi9_mQvA1s-qnUk5zVcyTyK4y9a7mh5wNBsA5o3r6Q2BKpsyN1ASiBZmjulzRhWm8bF2NuryD9lHbctebYc/s1600/IMG_3810.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="745" data-original-width="1087" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1v8kBW78RmguIbF8eD1gGlWriV3Al6ZC_xs9HBlwQtqlbFxMqgNj7pWUnWi9_mQvA1s-qnUk5zVcyTyK4y9a7mh5wNBsA5o3r6Q2BKpsyN1ASiBZmjulzRhWm8bF2NuryD9lHbctebYc/s320/IMG_3810.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately, my first attempt at priming the miniatures went terribly awry. It splattered out in clumps across three of the Death Guard.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thankfully a quick bath of Pine Sol and a scrubbing with a toothbrush undid the damage. Once cleaned up and dried off, they were successfully primed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I will continue to post updates as progress goes.WQRobbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17436898737750581192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453592533211427430.post-4065452861713633762018-06-11T12:22:00.001-04:002018-06-11T12:22:10.993-04:00Games Workshop comes to townI suppose it is surprising that Games Workshop never bothered to open a store in my hometown, but with the dedicating gaming store having gone out of business last year, and one of the comic book/gaming stores closing this year, I guess they saw a void that could be filled. So the new store opened last week, and I visited it for the first time yesterday.<br />
<br />
In so many ways the experience was typical of what you hear about on the internet. I was immediately approached by a friendly store manager who asked a series of questions: am I familiar with Games Workshop, what games do I play, what armies do I play, have I seen the new stuff, etc. Thankfully he was a charming enough guy to not appear to be too pushy, especially given my expectations. <br />
<br />
It's been a while since I've been in a GW store, and I noticed that they are more organized now for the newcomer than they used to be with large signs saying "Start Here" and "What's Next." There's also the obvious paucity of non-GW stuff. I keep expecting to see scratchbuilt terrain on tables, but there is no way that is going to happen.<br />
<br />
Years and years ago when I first came here to Kansas I got back into GW in a big way because that was the game being played at the FLGS. From that came the pretty sizable Brazen Claws Space Marine army I put together and highlighted on this blog.<br />
<br />
On a sale day at a different gaming store I picked up the "Know No Fear" starter set for the most recent edition of Warhammer 40K, a pretty solid deal in terms of miniatures and a mini-version of the new rules.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpD5tlyuNfghTiGxScLyKf0S-K3fikWogw_YNNZXmAcDofTZwpLGJS4IMaUj63-novosFnqF_0eCuqL-8e-YJXNY0NG1dk6oydW5ibHMAOJ2aqsasiLGPm-Noi9tXU8pakfAPNPUM0o04/s1600/knownofear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="950" data-original-width="920" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpD5tlyuNfghTiGxScLyKf0S-K3fikWogw_YNNZXmAcDofTZwpLGJS4IMaUj63-novosFnqF_0eCuqL-8e-YJXNY0NG1dk6oydW5ibHMAOJ2aqsasiLGPm-Noi9tXU8pakfAPNPUM0o04/s320/knownofear.jpg" width="309" /></a></div>
The store isn't super excited about people bringing in miniatures bought from other places (although I'm not sure how they would know), and thusly are hosting two "escalation leagues" for Age of Sigmar and 40K. So I could, if I wanted to participate, begin a new SM army, a Nurgle SM army, or opt for something completely different.<br />
<br />
So once again the question becomes "do I want to play regularly, and commit to spending a bit of cash and time to do it, or do I want to play something out of my house, perhaps irregularly, but with stuff I already have?"WQRobbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17436898737750581192noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453592533211427430.post-49689680664475731712018-05-17T15:20:00.000-04:002018-05-17T15:20:39.590-04:00What happened<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's not like I didn't do ANYTHING during that time...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So, like sixteen, seventeen months with no posts on this blog.<br />
<br />
What happened? Got separated. Moved out of my house. Got divorced. Got primary custody of the my kids. Purchased my old from my ex and me and moved back in. Got into a serious relationship. Getting remarried later this year.<br />
<br />
During that time I did manage to continually run an RPG campaign (chronicled over at <a href="http://graphpapergames.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Graph Paper Games</a>), first <b>Bash</b>, and then <b>Dungeons & Dragons</b>. For the latter I have been working studiously on making a new modular dungeon for the game, but haven't been painting much in the way of miniatures. And besides, this is my wargaming blog...<br />
<br />
But on the horizon, things are slowing down in my life and beginning to settle into a pattern. Free time is opening up again, and I'm wanting to get back to painting and maybe trying to organize a good day to do a little wargaming.<br />
<br />
I'm spoiled for options. There's the new <b>Warhammer 40K</b>, of which I have the starter set. There's the <b>Walking Dead</b> miniatures game, of which I also have the starter set. Then sometimes I just think to myself, "let's just do pirates or something."<br />
<br />
But in any case, I do hope to reinvigorate this blog in some way, shape, or form. So thanks for hanging in there.WQRobbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17436898737750581192noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453592533211427430.post-16650243620517786672016-12-27T14:34:00.001-05:002016-12-27T14:34:24.228-05:00The 2016 recapI managed over the Christmas vacation among the various movie marathons I had with my kids, to get this little fellow painted up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvYmmPvW4xM-keH6UXA2LCeSwwJEzboDIy3rB9zkLUPYNngvN6OVx_qKNNKz_a48vPpDtpHUifVqNl0l3cAL_-uTrBdseMAxOiH3npz6qQNLAl8wfwyBByE2qRFwAna0TkadnJbrVbEaM/s1600/blogger-image-635862591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvYmmPvW4xM-keH6UXA2LCeSwwJEzboDIy3rB9zkLUPYNngvN6OVx_qKNNKz_a48vPpDtpHUifVqNl0l3cAL_-uTrBdseMAxOiH3npz6qQNLAl8wfwyBByE2qRFwAna0TkadnJbrVbEaM/s320/blogger-image-635862591.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A plague rat from my giant pile of Reaper Bones. He's delightfully gross in appearance, and brings my grand and likely final total for the year to 97. This is a substantial increase from the previous year's 68, which was the worst year on record, but a far cry from my heyday from many years ago. I strongly suspect I'll never be that productive ever again.<br />
<br />
There are a couple of things that contributed to the uptick in painting. First is having a friend who organized a bunch of wargaming Saturdays and got me painting up miniatures for that. Second was the release of the <i>Battle for Vedros</i> box set, which I painted in its entirety so that my son and I could play. Third was another friend of mine getting me into <i>Kings of War</i>, which got me painting up figures for both his army and mine. And then there are all those Reaper Bones...<br />
<br />
I played a surprising number of games in 2016, at least for me. Even half a dozen is a lot with my normal schedule. That's why it is hard to imagine was 2017 will be like, since the organizer of most of those wargaming afternoons moved away this past Autumn. My son's interest in wargaming was fleeting as the allure of peers and video games drew him away.<br />
<br />
That leaves most of the initiative on me. I feel like the Vedros set was a pretty good sweet spot for me: twenty of so figures that were similar enough to do some assembly-line work but different enough to keep me from getting bogged down. The other thing I need to discover is that mental place where I can focus and get back into painting again. It's too easy to just binge-watch TV instead of painting miniatures, but one is actually good for me. Less TV, more mental quiet. That's a good goal for 2017, even if I don't get 100 miniatures painted.WQRobbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17436898737750581192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453592533211427430.post-9244305846800341742016-11-24T13:23:00.000-05:002016-11-24T13:23:04.719-05:00Thanksgiving Desert: a Hellhound!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Not a wargaming piece, per se, but I did manage to get this Hellhound painted up over the Thanksgiving Day holiday as well. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is finally getting cold here in the Sunflower State, which means more time inside, and more time to paint. That got me working once more on my son's Warhammer 40K Ork army, with this four fine fellows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also inspiring me to get painting is the <a href="http://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/the-seventh-annual-analogue-hobbies.html" target="_blank">Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge</a>. I like to track my own painting throughout a given year, but the idea of setting a goal and seeing if I can hit it is pretty interesting. 400 points would be eighty 28mm figures in four months. That's two figures every three days, or roughly five figures a week. Pretty brisk! A smart guy would take advantage of any warm days in late November/early December and start preparing miniatures and priming them (which is allowed).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Okay, I've got some time to think about this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, happy Thanksgiving to all my readers in the United States. I hope you have a great day with loved ones (and perhaps a bit of fun).</div>

I bought the box set of Warlord Games' sci-fi wargame <b>Beyond the Gates of Antares</b> a while back, where it sat for along time untouched. But this week I've having a bit of a "stay-cation" so I thought I would get some painting done. Rather than buy new miniatures, I figured I would give BtGoA a try.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These figures were fairly easy to assemble, except the legs. It's worth letting each part try before attaching the next, and the small, pincer-like legs don't have enough surface area to glue easily to the flimsy plastic bases and popped off even after gentle handling. I had to really glom the glue on the bases to get the figures to stick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that though, they were pretty easy and fun to paint, with a nice bit of detail but not too much, if you know what I mean. They work well with a black ink wash when you're done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, first unit of Ghar done, and as large infantry count as two points apiece.</div>

These fellows are from the Battle for Vedros, the starter game for Warhammer 40K I picked up a while back. As it turns out, this is just the tip of a green iceberg, because an old friend of mine from college gave to my son a huge box of unpainted orks, including a lot of vehicles, so and I have a huge project ahead of us.</div>

My brother-in-law is a science and electronics whiz and always up on the latest technology. So it's no surprise that he's already into the 3D printing thing. Last week he gave me a bunch of wargaming terrain, and this is the first of the lot: some barricades and a container. Not too hard to paint up, and I avoided putting labels or designs on them so they won't preclude themselves from being used in lots of genres.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have no idea how hard it was to make these--I will have to ask, but it is pretty cool that he could cobble these together using free designs off the internet and give them to me.</div>

I managed to get the last two figures from the Battle for Vedros set of Space Marines painted up in the colors of the Brazen Claws. The first is the real oddball of the group, the terminator sergeant. (Click on the pics to enlarge)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidlresKdVHDhIi-4eJfHwdsaj7O1hVeddX4BNAQYZNCbwTSiQlbYWiVBtUvvK5HmgZPjpelE5z0eg4aE5uy-FUebKif7Px8GQRdfXG2gw31s5uJjWhhl3gPt37FsAEbktmbD51FzpsZfM/s640/blogger-image--1101847727.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidlresKdVHDhIi-4eJfHwdsaj7O1hVeddX4BNAQYZNCbwTSiQlbYWiVBtUvvK5HmgZPjpelE5z0eg4aE5uy-FUebKif7Px8GQRdfXG2gw31s5uJjWhhl3gPt37FsAEbktmbD51FzpsZfM/s320/blogger-image--1101847727.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Seriously, outside of this warband, what am I supposed to do with this guy, given I already have a sergeant for my termies already? Maybe he could be a HQ in terminator armor in a pinch. Speaking of HQ's, here's the captain looking very spiffy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm really pleased with how he turned out. I had to come up with something to do with his banner, so I decided I'd incorporate the red claw symbol of the Brazen Claws into a big red bird on the banner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here is the whole group. I was comparing them some of my older figures and I like how my painting has improved. Plus with the three points for the last two figures (large infantry count as two), I'm at 80, which beats my 2014 total. As I mentioned early, the total from 2013 is a long way off (check the sidebar), but I have a few more months to go. Even so, I'm pretty pleased to have gotten more into the grove with painting figures again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for following me on this project. It's nice to get something completed, even a small group like this, and I appreciate your readership. Comments welcome!</div>

On a single trip to Half Price Books last week I managed to snag the following:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBSMLFi5vNN1XzNlakHfmHv83poX3ebscT5oQqLW0zq3Nyh03SLpOkJPLEtGhfS3PVMklu7IyW4phoiALyXzZl0ctry1kUDhJxgX65w4GxodiKLcBa4Cv8OVBK_mSEqAtdAwHM4w8Dy8U/s1600/fieldofglory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBSMLFi5vNN1XzNlakHfmHv83poX3ebscT5oQqLW0zq3Nyh03SLpOkJPLEtGhfS3PVMklu7IyW4phoiALyXzZl0ctry1kUDhJxgX65w4GxodiKLcBa4Cv8OVBK_mSEqAtdAwHM4w8Dy8U/s320/fieldofglory.jpg" width="249" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7-0jDvjtJPQGlzpuBb5hOya7IhcPJXSy_vUSZqDljp8rjBqGXdWp64zZqXOtVBVWP9UNdIx3CSlWfIR0Wxt3PpjpVdeu7_-uGOgtLwyZL3zYoAgyq8FHJubTz0GYn8bUwSDbiPUA6ia0/s1600/martianfront.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7-0jDvjtJPQGlzpuBb5hOya7IhcPJXSy_vUSZqDljp8rjBqGXdWp64zZqXOtVBVWP9UNdIx3CSlWfIR0Wxt3PpjpVdeu7_-uGOgtLwyZL3zYoAgyq8FHJubTz0GYn8bUwSDbiPUA6ia0/s320/martianfront.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Field of Glory</b> got a lot of good reviews when it came out, and I haven't had a chance to do much historical wargaming outside of the odd game of Saga in the last few years. I'll have to compare it to <b>Hail Caesar</b> to see which one seems more approachable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I liked Osprey's <b>Ronin</b>, and had a chance to look over a friend's copy of <b>In Her Majesty's Name</b> previously. It's not my favorite of the lot, but could be a fun "club" game to do with friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A friend of mine tried to organize a game of <b>All Quiet on the Martian Front</b> before he moved away and I even painted up some Martian tripods so I could participate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjv_fZUX2WQN2NsUIVKsYSQ5OMfA8UgVUDuK340MXI8KD3FkGGBNDWvb8KBo4uGhxacCKp7XpBW0dxnOovQ67PqO7KUlt0acoCHlV_-cbEE8Uyrj8aSVEg92Ptmet_l3RWzxtI5JeMt08/s1600/tripods1.com.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjv_fZUX2WQN2NsUIVKsYSQ5OMfA8UgVUDuK340MXI8KD3FkGGBNDWvb8KBo4uGhxacCKp7XpBW0dxnOovQ67PqO7KUlt0acoCHlV_-cbEE8Uyrj8aSVEg92Ptmet_l3RWzxtI5JeMt08/s320/tripods1.com.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well the game never happened but I still have the miniatures (which were fun to assemble and paint, by the way). So snagging the not-so-easy-to-find hardcover rulebook made sense, especially since it sounds like the company <a href="https://blainepardoe.wordpress.com/2016/01/21/case-study-the-demise-of-alien-dungeon-and-all-quiet-on-the-martian-front/" target="_blank">may be belly up</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It really feels like right now I'm spoiled for choices on what projects to work on, and what games to play. I'm almost done with the Space Marines for <b>Battle for Vedros</b>, and would like to get a few more quick games of that in with my son and his friends. I could play <b>Kings of War</b> at any time using my old Warhammer Fantasy dwarf army. I haven't really looked, but I could cobble together a <b>Frostgrave</b> warband with little trouble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of the three, I suspect I'm mostly likely to play <b>Field of Glory</b>. The struggle to get appropriate miniatures knocks AQotMF out of the top spot, and I've got several other skirmish games I could and wish to play before <b>In Her Majesty's Name</b>. I'll give myself until I finish the last pieces of the Space Marine band before I decide what I might do next, though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Comments welcome.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIzxGeWu-jwvrbLLH2K2ukfUqaD692aKSSmE-pZOljjnoA72rB4hPJoVUyAMmvloTdCs6GRI2CtjjIY0v6-lHNA59Z8wNQNHDGnvBGB7bD7iXNbpp5gh1b3zSDQHRnArSumRaroYhzxi4/s640/blogger-image--1167024798.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIzxGeWu-jwvrbLLH2K2ukfUqaD692aKSSmE-pZOljjnoA72rB4hPJoVUyAMmvloTdCs6GRI2CtjjIY0v6-lHNA59Z8wNQNHDGnvBGB7bD7iXNbpp5gh1b3zSDQHRnArSumRaroYhzxi4/s320/blogger-image--1167024798.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the <i>Battle for Vedros</i> box set there's a multi-melta dreadnought who doesn't have a multi-melta in the rules. For shooting, there's only a storm bolter, which is on the other power fist. But in any case, I was ready to paint this guy up. I already have two, Brothers Naismith and Phogallen, but I wanted this one to look differently than Phogallen, who is also a multi-melta dread. So Brother Chamberlain has a lot more battle damage, dirt, and rust on him, including a claw mark likely from some run-in with tyranids.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And with this miniature completed, I'm getting closer to my painting total for 2014. Once I make that, it is a lot harder to catch up to the 2013. In 2013 I was painting up tons of Vikings and ACW figures which made for an impressive haul. I'm not sure if I can match it with 40K figures, although in 2011 and 2012 I painted quite a few Brazen Claws to two of my highest years ever.</div>

I told my son he could paint his own Ork warband for the Battle for Vedros, but I've got plenty of orks lying around that I can paint myself. I'll leave most for my son, but I did find these four guys in the basement who were half painted. So I got them finished up and ready to go whenever the boy needs some extra boyz.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Recently I bought the "Battle for Vedros" box set, which included both an Ork and Space Marine army. After kicking around painting the small warband a host of different chapter schemes, I decided the smart play would be to just paint them like all my other Space Marines, namely the Brazen Claws. No reason to not be able to fold them into the rest of the army later, right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyways, here's the first part of the new additions, a six-man tactical squad with sergeant, flamer, and missile launcher. The light's got a bit of a glare on these guys, but I think they turned out pretty good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So six more to the ranks of the sons of the beloved Talus IV. That puts me at last year's total, 68, which is pretty cool given that it is only July.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Games Workshop recently released a kid-friendly (or at least as kid-friendly as they can be) version of Warhammer 40K called "Battle for Vedros." The box set includes a scaled back version of the Black Reach set from a few generations go: Space Marines and Orks. Also included in an introductory rulebook with a <i>very </i>simplified ruleset of 40K intended to be used as an introduction to the game. There's no army lists--you play with the miniatures you have, although they cleverly have "reinforcements" that you can add on with each side having an equal number of reinforcements (which I guess work out points-wise with each other). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rules are <i>mostly </i>compatible with 40K, but are extremely unified. For example, all Space Marines hit on a 3+, all Orks on a 5+. Instead of templates, the missile launcher in the tactical squad just gets three to-hit rolls, the flamer automatically hits three times. Almost everything is a 4+ to wound. Where it begins to diverge from the regular rules is the Space Marine Dreadnought, which instead of having vehicles rules it just has the special rule that it can only be damaged by the Ork Warboss' power klaw or the gyrocopter's rokkits. It's also completely nerfed offensively, removing its power fist and multi-melta in favor of just giving it extra attacks (two shots, four close combat). There's no attack bonuses for charging, no leadership rules or breaking--you just lock up until one side or the other is wiped out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are no rules for cover, special deployment, or specific scenarios. It's a straight up fight until one side is wiped out (because Victory Points would require real units or points, which the game doesn't really have).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For $50 you get a pretty good deal in terms of miniatures. You get one SM captain, terminator sergeant, 7 tactical marines, and a dread. On the ork side is a warboss, 12 ork boyz, 5 nobs, and the copter. The odd one out of the group is the terminator sergeant; any terminator unit you buy will have its own sergeant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But in any case, I bought the game (despite having all the minis already from an earlier Black Reach set) because my son wanted to start playing the game and it seemed a cheap price point entry since we don't own the most recent rulebook. I figure if he paints up the orks and plays enough games I'll consider investing the rulebook and go from there. If he drops it, I've saved quite a bit of money.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Comments welcome!</div>

I was invited to a friend's house to play the Games Workshop Lord of the Rings game (the same friend I battled in a SAGA game a while back). There were three of us. Bob commanded a huge army of orcs backed up by warg riders, six orc heroes, and a Ring Wraith (80 miniatures total). I commanded a group of Rohan militia led by Eomer and two captains. Garrett played a relief force of rangers led by Aragorn (59 miniatures between the two forces).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Every player had different victory conditions. The orc leader wanted to kill heroes. Aragorn wanted to take out the Ring Wraith. I just wanted to keep the three houses from burning.</div>

In the end the forces of Men came within a single figure of losing 50% of their troops and thus giving the orcs a load of victory points. The orcs slew only one hero, gaining only a measly single VP. Aragorn killed the Ring Wraith, gaining 6 VP. I managed to keep all three houses intact, each worth 4 VP for a total of 12, making me the clear winner of the conflict.<br />
<br />
It has been forever since I've actually won a wargame, and I have to admit I was stunned. I lost a lot of troops, but by staying focused on my scenario goals I won the day!<br />
<br />
A big tip of the hat to Garrett, who set a great table and put together an easy intro scenario.<br />

<br />I'm just knocking away at the lead/plastic mountain of miniatures in my basement. I assembled these guys <a href="http://thearmycollector.blogspot.com/2015/12/wip-ork-boyz.html" target="_blank">a while back</a> but finally got around to painting them. Looking back over the blog, I seem I have a bunch more stuffed away in there. I kept the palette simple, although I'm not sure there's enough contrast between the blue shirts and the green skin (I was just really tired of painting red clothing and wanted to do something different.<br />
<br />
Looking back over my blog, apparently there are a good number of these Orks hiding in the pile. Maybe this is the start of a new project? Maybe. In any case, I've got eight more painted for the year too.<br />

So here they are.<br />
