June Wrap Up

I have to say that, despite leaving town for a week, June turned out to be a pretty productive month on the hobby side of things.  I managed to get 19 points worth of painting done, although I'll freely admit that part of that is the occasionally-controversial ten points for a vehicle and five points for less-than-28mm figures.  When I first started the painting points, I only painted 28mm figures, but now I'm stretching out into other ranges and I don't know how to adapt the points, or if I should really bother.

The bottom line is, things got painted and that's all to the good.  What's really a big deal is that I finished a project, which never happens, in this case the Viking warband for SAGA.  Now I just need to get those guys over to Bill so they can terrorize those puley Scots of his.

Speaking of Bill, I've started another project at his encouraging, namely painting up some cheap plastic ACW figures for a game of Hearts of Tin.  I got a good start on what is going to be a big but not particularly complicated project in June, and should in the next few days be ready to post pics of quite a few more.

Budget-wise, I'm wiped out for the month, and to be perfectly honest have gotten a start on the next month's allotment.  But since that project is kind of a secret, you'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for reading!  I appreciate the support!

The First ACW Confederates

As I mentioned in my last post Bill over at Wargaming from an Armchair proposed this "let's both build an ACW army" project with the idea of using the "Hearts of Tin" rules from Battle Game of the Month.  However Ross from BGotM has been revising those rules, including make them for singly-based figures, which really doesn't work for the miniatures we were planning on using.

Speaking of which, one of the things that I liked about this plan was we agreed to go retro and use old IMEX figures, the kind you can buy from Hobby Lobby for just a few dollars.

Totally unrelated side note: there's a rumor out there in Kansas that Hobby Lobby is somehow connected to the Westboro Baptist Church.  This is actually completely inaccurate, and Hobby Lobby's corporate offices released a press comment to that effect.  That's good, because I really didn't want to feel bad about buying this figures.

So right now this project feels a little hung up, at least until we settle on a good set of rules.  I didn't go all into detail on these figures, mostly just painted them up and hit them with a coat of varnish which will hopefully keep the paint of the soft, pliable plastic.  The real upside is that I'm five points closer to my non-existent painting goal for the year.  With this recent uptick in painting I'm almost looking like I'm at my regular painting speed again.

VSF Command Car Finished

Not a huge change, just a quick tidy-up in terms of a paint job.  Actually I repainted the entire thing, mostly looking to get a clean, even coat.  So, this one's done, and now I'm moving onto another phase of the project, namely painting up some figures for GASLIGHT.

And while it seems like a lot for a fairly small item, it's ten points towards my painting total on account of being a vehicle.  To be fair, I did repaint the whole thing.

Speaking of painting totals, I'm also working on a completely different project, an American Civil War army (or armies, since I'll likely do both sides eventually).  I'm using cheap IMEX ACW figures, so the project is very, very cheap to do.  That's good, because between it and yet even a third project yet to be announced, I'm tapped out of funds for the month.  So I'll be focusing on what I have purchased and getting it painted.  I actually got most of the first five Confederates painted up just to see how they would look, and they'll be finished tomorrow (when I'll hopefully post a pic for you and get those points onto the painting total as well).

Until then, thanks for looking, and feel free to comment or follow me on Google Plus!

WQRobb's VSF Vehicle Restoration

Among Bill's many various wargaming challenges to me is to try to put together a small force for G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. (which I may just call "Gaslight" from here on out).  I combed my sizable lead pile and found a pretty good start, pre-ordered some re-inforcements, and did some serious digging to find two Happy Meal toys I bought over a decade ago.  The toys were from Disney's movie Atlantis the Lost Empire, one of the few Victorian Science Movies out there for the mass market.

As you can see, I tried to paint one of the vehicles, but didn't do the best job of it.  The paint is pretty streaky, and I can see I even tried to do some weathering, which also doesn't look very good.

So, I'm going to re-paint this fellow and try to spruce it up.  It'll make a nice command car for my eventual expedition force.  I'll post a follow-up pic.

Berzerkers and the completed Viking Warband

I finally got the Viking berzerkers painted, meaning I have a full six points of Vikings painted for Saga.  I suppose I could consider adding another hearthguard or warrior unit to add some flexibility, but for now the six points I have serve me fairly well, and I want to move on to other projects.  Four more points for the painting total, though.

Here's a shot of the entire warband.  It numbers slightly over thirty figures, which isn't bad for a small army for a skirmish-based game.

WIP Berzerkers

I just wanted to take a quick second to prove that I am actually working on painting the last unit for my Viking warband, a unit of berzerkers.  I actually own Gripping Beast Viking Berzerkers, with their nudity and wolf pelts, but before I bought those I had cobbled together these fellows so I thought I'd paint them up first.   Since in SAGA Berzerkers are essentially "one hit wonders" that hit hard and then die sloppily, I thought it would be appropriate that all of them should wear red shirts.
